And there were a lot of reasons to hate guitar solos, that's for sure. When punk was coming up, rock had gotten so vapidly overblown. It didn't apply to Jerry, but most "guitar solos" you'd hear in mid to late 70s rock bands ... zzzzzzz. And the general lyrics? Turn that zzzzzzz up to 13! "God save the queen, she ain't no human bean" was a real jolt of fresh air.

So some of the anti-hippie thing, I think, was a reaction to what the 60s had left in its wake musically, as far as you could see from the vantage point of the time. The limo-riding, record-company-touted "stars," the huge shows with nothing at their heart musically, the pretentious solos. The punks went back to the edginess of the real 60s, which the Dead (in a different way) really did maintain, but punk music fans didn't necessarily know the Dead, just the reputation and the hippie stereotype.

I completely agree. Although I was too old to hang out with punk rockers in my home town one of them asked if there was a room available in the squat I lived in. Walking past his room hearing The Damned's first record was a real blast after passing so many doors with guff like Yes, ELP (Tarkus for god's sake !), or Supertramp wailing on.

I've always felt that my generation hung on far to long controlling radio and television pop music shows and should have been kicked out to grass when the 70s started. How long is right for a music generation, six years ?

That is spot on AR . There are places GD can't bring you . I know it seems obvious , but sometimes we do get a tad myopic . Or I do .
